WEEK 4- Sampling Ideas

I knew that before I could start doing some toiling I had to sample some areas of the jacket that I either wasn't sure whether to include or I definitely want to have just need to see if it worked well.

The Inner hood- This idea was to have a 2 in 1 hood, so after constructing the outer, panelled foot I thought I'd trail this idea out of jersey. I used the scuba hood idea and changed the panels around to what I had designed and overlocked it together. Annoyingly I didn't cut it out of the stretch right and wasn't able to put it on. After finding this out, I decided it wasn't the best idea to keep forward for this jacket, as the jersey wouldn't be waterproof and I thought it would be uncomfortable around the face, chin and neck.

Phone Pocket- I knew this was an idea I needed to keep and get right for this jacket, as it is perfect for hikers to stay in connect if lost/injured. I measured around an arrange of phone sizes (from iPhones to Samsung shapes), added the depth of an average phone and extended it by 2cm to include both seam allowance and extra room. I also used a 13cm zip to have a small opening so it doesn't fall out if the zip is accidentally left open. This idea was successful with the first sample, I only need to bond tape around the outside of the pocket just to make it even more secure.

Tension- I trailed this idea out for around the sleeve (to make a cuff) and around the outer back panel (to bring in the material to the body). I used the binding machine in Hot works and changed the tension motor by 10% to see the difference in tension or to be preferred just flat. After all this trailing, I think I decided to keep the areas I was considering to tension to stay flat. This is due to it not being stretchy enough and that it would be too tight around the wrists, due to pattern cutting it to fit the sleeve.

Taping/ Welting- The only reason I wanted to sample this was to trail out whether may fabric would work with the sonic welting machine and if it taped well. I found it to be successful and work with both the mesh lining and outer waterproof fabric.

Overall, by sampling out ideas to see if they were what I wanted to do, I have been able to cancel out idea that wouldn't have worked and focus on ideas that have and practice them before constructing the final garment.
